Learning outcomes

Elementary level students should be
able to:

Understand and respond to basic requests and instructions
Ask and respond to simple questions
Use simple formulaic expressions
Make simple comparisons
Describe the locations and physical relationships between objects
Recognise and use core vocabulary in key topic area

Pre-Intermediate level students should be able to:
Use an increasing range of functional expressions in context
Conduct a simple transaction for the exchange of goods and services
Understand and use some common idiomatic expressions
Correctly order words to form simple clauses sentences and utterances
Understand ways of relating actions to time
Recognise and use vocabulary in key topic areas

Intermediate level students should be
able to:

Confidently use appropriate functional language in a range of situations
Understand a range of English idioms
Understand and express nuances of meaning relating to probability and supposition
Understand and use a range of complex question structures
Recognise and understand a range of register markers
Recognise and use extended vocabulary in key topic areas

Upper-Intermediate level students
should be able to:

Speak spontaneously and relatively fluently on a range of topics
Express and justify opinions and beliefs
Summarise information and ideas
Understand and express more abstract ideas
Recognise and use extended vocabulary in most topic areas

Advanced students should be able to:
Demonstrate a knowledge of, and an ability to use, a range of presentation techniques
Communicate an in-depth knowledge of chosen areas of study, including specialised and technical vocabulary
Maintain appropriate linguistic content in relation to register and genre
Modify contributions to express a range of modalities
Demonstrate an ability to direct and manage conversational exchanges
