A two week* IELTS preparation course for students aged 15+ who are B1 level or higher (*25 hours per week Mon-Fri)
Orientation
Our tutors lead students through the exam in detail. The exam orientation classes include: The purpose and structure of the examMark allocationsThe range of task types The importance of word-limits, grammar and spellingWhat to expect on the day
Reading
Students are exposed to a wide variety of authentic texts and learn how to: Quickly identify text types and topicsSkim read to get the gist of a textScan for key information Read for detailRecognise or infer the opinions and attitudes of the writer
Listening
In addition to specific examination practice, participants will gain enormous benefit from two weeks immersion in an English-speaking environment. This helps students attune themselves to the sounds and nuances of the language and they will become accustomed to listening and responding to natural communication in English. Content includes: Using context and contextual cluesAttending to key words and phrasesApproaching the different task typesTransferring of answers
Writing The course covers writing sessions on:Planning and structuring answersConventions, layout and paragraphsLetter-writingDescribing information contained in graphs, charts and diagramsCohesion and cohesive devices
Students are also expected to produce a number of self-timed essays outside of the course contact hours. These are submitted electronically and professionally marked in the UK by experienced IELTS tutors, who identify areas of weakness and give suggestions for remedial work.
Speaking
Approaching the speaking test can be daunting for many IELTS candidates. By working with a native English-speaking tutor and having plenty of opportunities for speaking in English, students are able to build their confidence in this area. The content of the speaking skills classes include: Topic preparationPresenting with confidence Giving your opinionTaking and holding turns in a conversationMaintaining a conversation
Towards the end of the course, practice tests are held following the IELTS test format. These are conducted by the course tutor in front of other class members, enabling peer feedback in addition to that given by the tutor.
Vocabulary
The range and complexity of the candidate’s vocabulary are key indicators of their English level. It is vital that candidates not only express themselves with clarity, but also demonstrate to the examiners the depth of their knowledge of English. In approaching the teaching of vocabulary, we focus on important word groups and productive vocabulary development: Greek and Latin prefixes and suffixesWord rootsFunctional semantic groups
Multiple Choice
Students are exposed to and gain familiarity with different types of multiple-choice question. In addition, the course looks at how to identify different false answer types and how to approach questions to which candidates do not know the answer.
Students also engage in the process of devising their own multiple-choice questions in order to understand the processes at work.
