This course has been designed for students who are in the early to middle years of their secondary education, and who have been studying English for two years or more.
At this stage in their language learning, students will be starting to use English in a slightly more abstract way. They will be starting to manipulate some of the structural elements of the language, through substitution, re-ordering and supplementation. With this comes the freedom to apply their knowledge in new and exciting ways. The course provides a wide range of activities in which learners can experiment and be more creative with their language use.
As with the lower level courses, there is plenty of opportunity for information exchange, but more emphasis is placed on sharing and comparing ideas, thoughts and emotions. In addition, the course aims to start placing the language more firmly in a cultural context, incorporating information on British culture, geography and history.
Reaching an intermediate stage in language learning usually engenders mixed emotions. On the one hand, students are now able to do most functional tasks in a relatively connected and coherent way, but the learning curve beyond this is a steep one, and can be de-motivating. The Threshold course helps learners re-connect with the language by offering the opportunity to use English creatively to communicate their ideas, dreams, hopes and ambitions.
